FOODILY - Mondo Cool Recipe Search Engine

Just got turned onto Foodily.

“Foodily is a food site.  More accurately, we are the world’s largest recipe network, bringing together recipes from across the web so you can compare any recipe and find the ones your friends like.”

Great layout.  Searches multiple food sites.  Integrates with Facebook, though what doesn’t anymore.

Lair’s “Tips ‘n’ Tricks” #2

When you want to have very even cuts of potatoes for using in potato salad, stews, soups, etc.  A very simple and quick method to achieving this is to use a french fry cutter for your first initial cuts.  This gives you uniform sticks of potatoes to then cut in the other direction to achieve perfect squares all the same size.  The potatoes will also cook evenly and at the same time.  It’s a real time saver and you’ll be impressed with your uniform presentation as well.   You can still find the old standard french fry cutters in most super markets.

Shoutout To Two Essential Local Food Related Stores

Over the past few years have become regulars at two places and would like to highly recommend their goods and services:

1)  Tymkovich Meats - “Purveyors of Fine Meat and Meat Product - Family Owned Since 1950. “Old-fashioned, home-town butcher shop located in Denver, Colorado. We specialize in quality meat products”.   Huge selection of meats and other related products.  Homemade items.  Competitive prices over grocery stores.  Discount bulk  packages.  Most meat grown in Colorado.  Friendly, personable service!  As the old saying goes, “Get to know your butcher.”  It does pay.  Give ‘em a visit.     6911 N. Washington St. Denver, Colorado 80229 303-288-8655

2)  Savory Spice Shop  - “Savory Spice Shop offers a large variety of seasonings and spices.  Our spices are ground fresh on the premises in small, weekly batches, so that we can offer the freshest possible product. Our more than 140 seasonings are original recipes and are hand-blended on-site. Both are offered for sale in as little as a half ounce and in either bags or bottles. Savory Spice Shop also offers extracts, sauces and more.”   This place will transform your cooking!  Been going their since they opened the first shop down on Platte River Dr. back in 2004.  Try any of their blends for a good starting place.  All are named after Colorado mountains or locations.  Each mix has good recommendations for what to use it on.   Then you can start learning more and more about what each spice does to certain foods.   These guys are expanding like mad.  If you visit one of their stores you will not want to leave because of the awesome aromas!  See their website for locations.

To keep leftover raw onion in your refrigerator without having it smell up the crisper drawer or the rest of the fridge, simply wrap the onion in wax paper before putting it into a zip loc bag for storage.  A side benefit is that it also helps the onion last longer before spoiling.

Test post from iTouch…on lunch break and finished up leftovers. Dutch oven roasted chicken with tomatoes and Italian seasoning…fall off the bone moist! And mashed potatoes and gravy. Nap time! I wish.

Have A Main Photo Website Too

Being into photography too, I also keep an album of bunches of cooking, grilling, smoking and food photos over on my photo website.  The album is called Greenwood Grill and BBQ…because most the stuff is made and shot at home…Greenwood is the street.  Clever, eh?  Umm, yeah.

I’m not going to post much of those photos here in that I sort of want to kick off this blog with newish stuff.   But if you want to look there’s photos of smoked turkeys, brisket, beef, pork, Cornish game hen, grilled pizza, brats, grilled stir fry, homemade salsas, pork green chili, Finnish pasties, Bahn Mi subs and breads.

There’s a bunch of non-food, artistic and concert photos there as well.  Click on over!
